Arguably the most famous person in San Francisco’s history is Joshua Abraham Norton, who in 1859 declared himself Emperor of the United States. The eccentric Emperor Norton was embraced by the people of SF and his title went unchallenged until his death. Nearly 30,000 people flooded into the city for Emperor Norton’s funeral in 1880.
